Considering What is of Greatest Worth
Worship for me is the moment when we turn our being toward an intention of openness, discovery and anticipation. Worship can occur in a small circle of eight-year olds gathered for Sunday school. It can unfold in the midst of small group ministry as members lean in and listen to the transformation of the soul unfolding before them. My aspiration in worship is to co-create a space in which together we consider those things most important in our world and in our lives. Working with a team of leaders, worship is inherently collaborative in planning and in experience. There is a dialectic between the service and the soul. I believe in creative worship that draws on the strengths of a diverse team of leaders and incorporates a broad base of wisdom. My style is dynamic and playful while reflective and emotional. Below you will find videos of sermons, a sample story for all ages and several meditations as well as prayers. In my current setting, I write most of the stories for all ages. They include a cast of characters led by a team of puppeteers who playfully share messages about generosity, justice, hope, compassion and the interdependent web. The central character is the stories is a caterpillar named Emerson. My sermons draw on a range of issues and styles including justice themes alongside spiritual growth. I believe that social justice and spirituality are two sides of the coin of conscious living. Hence, my services will emphasize both spiritual growth and social transformation. I enjoy working closely with musicians in order to create a service that communicates a message in a variety of forms. Often, I will include a musical reflection after the sermon or musical meditation, knowing there are a variety of learning styles gathered on any given Sunday. While most of the samples found here are from Sunday services, I enjoy creating worship services for winter solstice, Christmas Eve, soulful sundown, the Passover seder, and watch night services (New Year's Eve). In my capacity as the Chair of the Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice, I often plan interfaith services as well as speak in diverse houses of worship for special occasions.
